Every year starting as early as February and lasting well into the summer, many asthmatics seem to get one of those "springtime colds" that lasts for weeks and never seems to go away. Often what people think is just an irritating prolonged cold are actually allergies. If symptoms include clear nasal discharge and congestion, itchy eyes and ears, no fevers, wheezing, sneezing, or cough and lasts more than 1-2 weeks, the problem may be allergies. Asthmatics should take several steps to accurately diagnose and treat possible seasonal allergies.

1. Find the Culprit-The best way to discover for sure what is aggravating allergy and asthma problems is to have skin prick testing done by a board-certified allergist. Minute amounts of common allergy triggers are pricked, scratched, or injected under the skin and the individual is watched carefully for skin or respiratory reactions. Another way of checking for allergies is done by a blood test and is called radioallergosorbent testing (RAST). RAST testing checks for IgE antibodies that have been produced for different types of allergies. Although this type of testing is a bit easier, it is generally thought to not be as accurate as skin prick testing.

2. Control the Environment-Often springtime allergies include tree pollen, which may travel in the wind for miles. Although tree pollen may not be able to be removed from the outdoors, asthmatics with allergy problems often can at least lower the pollen concentration inside their homes. Windows should be left closed and air conditioners and HEPA air filters used to reduce pollen particles in the air.

3. Medications-Asthmatics with allergies need to discuss with their doctors what types of allergy medications would be most appropriate for them. Several fairly new non-sedating antihistamines are available over-the-counter, but with severe allergies and asthma symptoms, steroid inhalers and nasal sprays may be added. Oral steroids may be recommended for short-term relief from allergies, but are generally not recommended for long-term use due to increased side effects.

4. Allergy desensitization-allergy injections may be an option for moderate-to-severe asthmatics with allergies. Desensitization shots are usually given in an allergist’s office at least weekly for one to two years. Although this can be quite time consuming and expensive, significant relief can be obtained for years after the injections end. These shots contain very small amounts of the offending allergy triggers, and allow the body to slowly build up antibodies to block the allergy reaction.

Over 60% of asthmatics have allergy problems that consistently trigger their symptoms. Several studies have shown that treating even ordinary nasal allergies can often markedly improve asthma. Correctly treated individuals will feel better, have more energy, and will be more able to enjoy the warmer days of spring!

Today’s drinking water filters come in a variety of shapes, sizes and even colors, but what’s more important is what’s on the inside. Just because a drinking water filter looks good, does not necessarily mean that it is the right choice for your home.

When you are shopping for drinking water filters, your first guide is product performance data. In some states, drinking water filter companies are required to provide this information along with their sales brochures. But regulation is not nationwide, so depending on where the company is located, they may not be able or willing to disclose performance facts.

The first rule for shopping for drinking water filters: Don’t buy any drinking water filter that does not provide product performance data.

Product performance data sheets will allow you to compare the effectiveness of a product (what it leaves in, what it takes out), as well as the cost of use, either in terms of gallons of water filtered or in terms of time. It may be a little difficult to figure out at first, but here’s the simplest formula that we have found.

On the average, each person uses 80-100 gallons of water per day, but most of that goes for flushing toilets and so does not apply to drinking water filters. The effectiveness of a drinking water filter that attaches to the kitchen tap should be based on how many people you have in your family and how much water you expect them to drink from the tap on any given day.

According to the Mayo Clinic, it is difficult to determine how much water a person needs on any given day. Factors like weight, exercise and sex come into play, as well as overall health.

According to the company that provides the #1 rated drinking water filters in America, a healthy adult needs at least eight 8 ounce glasses of water per day. Based on that "rule of thumb", their countertop drinking water filter will last six months before the cartridge needs to be replaced.

When evaluating drinking water filters, it is assumed that a family of four will drink about 500 gallons of water in six months. So, the cost of use for a drinking water filter takes into account the cost of replacement filters over a six month period or per 500 gallons.

Backing up email

XP

With outlook express open, select tools ? options from the main menu and then select the "Maintenance" tab and then the box marked "Store folder". Once this opens use, control %2B c to copy the folder location address. Now close all folders. Go to "Start" and select "Run". Now use the Control %2B v keys to paste the folder location into the box.

Vista

With Windows mail open, click tools ? options from the main menu and then select the "Advanced" tab. Now click the box marked "Maintenance" and then the box marked "Store folder". Once this opens use, control %2B c to copy the folder location address. Now close all folders. Go to "Start" and select "Run". Now use the Control %2B v keys to paste the folder location into the box.

XP and Vista

In both cases, a new page will open showing all your mail folders. Select and copy the ones you want to back up and choose the place where you want to store this data. This could be an external drive or perhaps on a CD or DVD. Now click paste to store the data. Note: It is much safer to store any important information whether it is mail or something else somewhere other than on your computer. If do you store it somewhere on your computer and it crashes, you may not be able to retrieve it.

Moving emails to other folders

There are two ways you can do this (Windows and XP)

1. Right click the message you want to move and select "Move to Folder" and click the folder you want to move the email to.

2. A faster way is to click and hold down the mouse button on the message you want to move and still holding the mouse button down, drag the email to the required folder in your folder list. You can also do this to drag an email directly to an external hard drive.

I’ve come across a couple of articles recently on the debate of who you need to hire to translate your content.

Are Translation Agencies Better?

Both articles were written by translation agencies. Of course each long article stated that:

  • Companies should never hire a freelance translator for their foreign content.
  • Only an agency had the manpower to do everything.
  • You obviously need a translator, an editor, a proofreader and… well there were a few other professions on the list.

I have not run across articles written by freelance translators stating they are the best option for companies needing foreign content. My guess is they are too busy. And they can’t all bite the hand that feeds them. They also get work through translation agencies.

It would be more appropriate to see comprehensive guidelines written by a third party. But I haven’t seen any clearly written by an independent third party.

Wrong Debate

I actually think that the debate is elsewhere.

The question is not whether you need a translator with a team of agency staff, or a freelance translator.

I’ve held different marketing and sales positions in companies of various sizes and budgets. I was responsible for cross cultural communication in some form or another in each of those positions. And I definitely know what communication I need out in the field.

Is It Translation You Need?

The word "translation" used in connection for any sales materials brings images of bad sales results and extra hours for me to put together my own sales materials.

Good sales materials need to be crafted in its original language to bring in sales.

There is a good market for freelance translators.

There is also a good market for translation agencies.
